Mentor Training for Community Justice Program
Hennepin County Corrections building-Mens Facility 1145 Shenandoah Lane, Plymouth
Are you aware that the Minneapolis Police Department has had a crime prevention specialist working on reentry for the last 4 years in partnership with the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches?
Crime prevention is a critical piece of this project because 95% of people arrested come home and they either come home to the same people, places and things or they can change. Change happens in relationships and that is where you are important in increasing public safety.
We are working with people in your neighborhood who are sent to the Hennepin County Adult Correctional Facility (ACF). In 2007 the Community Justice Project matched 96 offenders with a mentor. Of the 48 mentees upon release who did not stay connected to their mentors 22 went back to the prison. Of the 48 mentees who stayed connected to their mentor after release only 1 has gone back to the ACF. Overall there has only been a 25 percent change of recidivism.
