Livability & Safety

We desire a safe and livable neighborhood. Knowing your neighbors and supporting local businesses can help. We also believe more City, County, and State resources are needed to support communities disproportionately affected by crime.

PPNA Public Testimony For Renter's Protections

On Wednesday August 28th the City of Minneapolis Housing Policy Committee held a public hearing on two renter protection hearings. PPNA staff members Cori and Tabitha shared testimony at the hearing. Two new ordinances were up for a vote by the Minneapolis City Council and PASSED at the committee level! One ordinance would limit aggressive barriers in tenant screening practices like discriminating based on past eviction, criminal, and credit histories, and the other would put

    2018 In Advocacy

Looking Back 2018 saw a lot of momentum-building for PPNA’s advocacy work. We deepened our work in renters’ rights with the Minneapolis Renters Coalition (MRC) and surrounding safety efforts with the South Minneapolis Public Safety Coalition (SMPSC). We also remained active in community issues that came up throughout the year, like the development on the corner of Chicago and Lake. Here are some highlights from the past year. Faces of Renting Project: Miss Linda (4/4)

Miss Linda has been living in Powderhorn Park for the last 15 years. When she stands out on her porch, neighbors stop by and say 'Hi' or browse through the Little Library in her yard. Before moving to her house in Powderhorn, she lived in Phillips for ten years; she considers the South Central Area her community. Miss Linda has worked all over: at Waite House, as a drywaller, in contract construction, at the Midtown Global Market selling cards, and most recently at Pillsbury

Faces of Renting Project: Chloe (3/4)

For the past five months, local artist Cori Lin (and PPNA part-time staff member!) has been working to illustrate the vibrant faces and stories of Powderhorn renters. Cori is currently looking for a Powderhorn renter family who would be interested in being featured in this project. The third portrait is of Chloe, shown against a backdrop of awards and certificates that decorate her kitchen wall. Chloe has been living in the same Corcoran apartment with her son, Trayvon, for t

Faces of Renting Project: Low & Hannah (1/4)

For the past four months, local artist Cori Lin (and PPNA part-time staff member!) has been working to illustrate the vibrant faces and stories of Powderhorn renters. Cori is currently looking for a Powderhorn renter family who would be interested in being featured in this project. The first portrait is of Low and Hannah. These roommates live off of Powderhorn Park and welcomed me into their lower duplex where Low has been renting for the last 8 years, joined by Hannah this

Recap of the Minneapolis Renters Coalition Open House: An event hosted to bring issues of Powderhorn

PPNA is a proud partner of the Minneapolis Renters Coalition (MRC), together we worked to organize an open house, sharing the concerns of renters with the City Council, City staff, and other community partners. The MRC presented a listing of changes and solutions that address issues facing renters in our community. Lively discussion was had by attendees throughout the open house. A special thanks to the City Council Members who join us! And to our partners at the MRC! Communi
