The Companions that Fill Our Lives with Love

The abundance of love we have for both our furry companions and loving neighbors is undeniable, and this campaign is a reminder of that ever-present love. In addition to love and connection, Pets of Powderhorn is a way for us to give back to a locally owned business that graciously sponsored this entire campaign. The kind humans and animal companions over at Urban Tails remind us of the warmth and power of community by sponsoring this campaign for a second year in a row.
In 2024, we launched Pets of Powderhorn to bring together animal lovers, neighbors, and community members. The warm and enthusiastic response of adorable, humorous, sassy, and uniquely expressive Powderhorn Pets flooded our submissions and filled our hearts with delight in a time we needed it most.
This year, we wanted to dedicate a special blog post to ALL of the Pets of Powderhorn. We made sure to specifically ask for pet bios this year, and the Powderhorn personalities truly shone through each photo and bio pairing. We hope that our adorable, silly, and vibrant Pets of Powderhorn leave you with a smile on your face, as they did for us!
Introducing… our Pets of Powderhorn 2025!
Pets of Powderhorn 2025 Winners!
Congratulations to the winners below! Each of these amazing, randomly selected, beloved companions will receive a hand-picked, high-quality goodie bag along with a $25 gift certificate to Urban Tails.
Maple & Elm
My 2 cats, Maple and Elm, are ten-year-old siblings rescued from Twin Cities Pet Rescue after their previous human had to go to assisted living. Maple is a calico, and Elm is black and white like a dairy cow. Maple enjoys looking out the window and going for walks in a pet stroller. Elm enjoys meeting building neighbors in the hallway of the building.

Gina
My name is Gina, and I am a princess. I have never had to work a day in my life, and I have NEVER done anything wrong. I love Minneapolis because there are so many birds and cars for me to chirp at out my window. I am very scary, and you should fear me. Meow.

Wobbles
Wobbles is a one-year-old pocket pit born with a rare condition called arthrogryposis.
He was a surprise (retained) birth, meaning nobody knew he was a part of the litter until making his grand entrance two hours after the rest of his siblings.
While Wobbles is only just a puppy, he has already been through more hardship than most. After rescuing himself from an abusive home and undergoing emergency surgery where vets pushed for euthanization, he was able to make a full recovery and do so with the biggest smile on his face.
Since Wobbles is unable to walk on cement, he has thoroughly enjoyed all of the cushiony fields of grass that Powderhorn has to offer. He also loves his new pair of Hot Wheels, which has made cruising the park that much more enjoyable. Wobbles loves all people, kids, and animals, so the next time you see him, be sure to say hello!

Ryujin
Last spring, Ryujin came all the way from Mississippi to find a home in Minnesota. There were two dogs on the transport that did not have a foster lined up, so I let fate choose since both were herding breed mixes. It wasn't long before I learned this sensitive, smart, and incredibly handsome boy was already home. He loves food, toys, and exploring new areas. When he is done with heartworm treatment and off exercise restrictions, we can't wait to spend more time at the parks (including Powderhorn!)

Beany
It was Mother's Day 2021. My baby mama was over, and I was celebrating her with our son. We notice a Rabbit that did not act like all the other 100 rabbits in my yard. He slowly kept moving toward us and was soon parked under the car. I took pictures and posted them on FB to see if it had a home. Most responses said to bring the bunny inside, it’s a Netherland dwarf, and it will not survive. I brought him in, and this was my first day being a new rabbit dad. Days went by, and no one claimed him, and I called, and all the rescues were full for over a year. I decided to Google how to be a rabbit owner. I learned the basics and was on my journey.
About Beany he loves to do blinkys, adores Ritz crackers (not really good for rabbits but he would argue with you that they are the best!), he doesn’t like to be picked up but if you do and flip and hold him like a baby he slowly falls asleep in your arms if you pet his nose. Beany is one of a kind and perfect little fur ball. :)

Every Single Pet of Powderhorn 2025!
Wally
Wally’s mission has always been simple: spread joy, chase smells, and be your emotional support goofball. One head tilt at a time, he’s been winning hearts and wagging his way through life ever since.

Louise
This big baby was found as a stray as a puppy and adopted through MACC's foster-to-adopt program last year. Lou loves walking the neighborhood and finding all the smells and occasionally a treat, walking through the neighborhood and the parks. She also loves stopping at DQ for a Pup Cup! Lou is always excited to meet new friends around the neighborhood and hang out on a patio at a local business after some good exercise.

‘Lil Mama
‘Lil Mama came to us through a Nextdoor post from someone who had dumped the dog with the friend, then disappeared. She was a breeder mama who had clearly recently had a litter of pups. She didn’t know how to play, and didn’t want to be outside. Now she loves meeting people and dogs on our walks through the neighborhood.

Norm
Despite popular opinion, Norm is indeed a girl. And not only is she a girl, but she is the sweetest, most loving girl you will ever meet. She spends her days headbutting anyone who walks by, playing with her favorite pink fish toy, and dog watching out of her apartment window.

Tina
Tina is a sweet indoor doggo we adopted in 2021. She doesn't love other four-legged friends but is the goodest girl with people. She loves balloons, chicken, the couch, and catching up on the neighborhood pee-mails. She feels lucky to live near Powderhorn Park - it has all the best smells in the city!

Luna
Luna is a 9-year-old rescue dog who loves to roll in the snow, go on long walks, and take naps. She is a mix of a lot of breeds, but primarily German Shepard and border collie. Her favorite food is peanut butter, and she’s kind of a bed hog. Her favorite part about living in Powderhorn is walking around Powderhorn Lake; her least favorite thing is all the stops her owner has to take on walks to check out the little free libraries. Luna doesn’t do well with other dogs due to some past trauma, but she loves people, so if you see her on a walk, feel free to say hello!

Winston
Winston is a spritely terrier-mix who was adopted from A Bond Between (Secondhand Hounds) in 2019. We’d just moved to Minneapolis, and after years of waiting, we were finally ready to become dog parents. He was very anxious at first, but obviously full of kindness and enthusiasm. Over the past 6 years, he has really blossomed. He’s a sweet, tender, empathetic little guy who brightens everyone’s day. He’s very gentle with kids and cats.
His best buddy/boyfriend, Tucker (a German Shepherd mix 4 times his size), lives downstairs in our duplex. They love chasing each other around our backyard. Tucker digs holes and Winston lies in them. Together they’ll howl and start a chorus of neighboring Powderhorn dogs joining in to “sing”.
Winston loves going on walks around the neighborhood, smelling flowers, and pooping in tall grass. His long legs, red fur, and perky ears make him resemble a fawn. On several occasions while at the park, young children have seen him and asked their parents if he’s a baby deer - I always interject and say “yes” to keep the magic alive. He’s a real Powderhorn pup!!

Appa
Appa is a beautiful little 110 lb, 9-year-old baby. Appa has a unique personality and appearance that helps him get many compliments while on our walks in Powderhorn Park. The compliments, however, don't distract him from his true mission of sniffing, chasing squirrels, and swimming in Powderhorn Lake. Appa loves treats, so if you see him around, he would love a snack!

Ivy (Aka Babs)
Ivy Aka Babs aka Babsie is living a true rags-to-riches tail. Hailing from a small trailer in rural Wisconsin, Babsies is enjoying a regal and charmed life in her palatial Powderhorn neighborhood abode with her humans, Natalie and Jimmy. Babs is a cultured and well-traveled feline and lives in Sweden with Natalie. She is also a muse (mews) to her grandmother Linda, as she is the subject of Linda’s paintings.

Hagrid
Gentle giant that we adopted 3 years ago, he’ll be 11 years old in October. He loves walks, being with his family, and cuddling. He’s a snuggler who is super tolerant with 2 kids hugging him as often as they can.

Gadugi (Ga-doo-Ghee)
A true Powderhorn love story: A couple across the park from us posted this kitten's availability in the neighborhood FB group. He came up to them in the park wanting to play. He appeared to be abandoned there, so they took him home. However, their o.g. cat rejected the adoption. He moved in with us at the age of 6 months. We named him Gadugi, the Cherokee word for "lifting each other up in the spirit of cooperation- for the good of us all." Gadugi is extremely playful and enjoys any cat toy bestowed upon him. He will carry his favorites up a flight of stairs to us to let us know he is ready for the day to start. Gadugi is now learning Cherokee along with his papa, a Cherokee Nation citizen who wrote and recorded a song, "Gadugi Boogie" in our Powderhorn studio with a lot of other local musicians chiming in.

Billie & Stevie
Billie and Stevie are our two rescue pups! They may look like twins, but believe it or not, they are 13 years old and 9 months old!
Billie has lived in and around the Powderhorn area for nearly her whole 13 years! Her early years were marked by many a walk around Powderhorn Lake. She is a sweet and chill girl who loves to snuggle and has the biggest smile I've ever seen on a dog. According to her pet DNA test, she's 1/2 pitbull and 1/4 chow-chow, which explains why she is often compared to an overgrown and lively cat.
Stevie is Billie's new buddy, having joined our household in April 2025. She is only 9 months old and a ball of energy who loves to run, walk, and sniff stuff around Powderhorn Park. She is also obsessed with Billie, although Billie is still adjusting to her new, energetic little sister. Named after Stevie Nicks, we like to joke that she is out "Gold Dust Puppy." Her favorite place to nap is in Mom's reading chair... which means Mom's a little behind on her library books.
We are so happy to have these two little furry buddies. They get us outside exploring our neighborhood on daily walks, and their friendly smiles make them magnets for meeting our neighbors!

Enchi (Enchilada)
This is Enchi! He is a Cocker Spaniel Mix. He is goofy, lovable, and loyal! I got him from a MN Pet Rehoming Facebook page; he is originally from Duluth, MN. He is the best boy and wants to play fetch and socialize all day! You can find him in the Whittier neighborhood!

Fox
Fox has a true rags-to-riches story: found by her human as an injured stray puppy in SE Asia, she survived sepsis, an amputation, and parvovirus and is now living her best life right here in Minneapolis. Walks in Powderhorn are her favorite activity (gotta get caught up on her social peedia throughout the day), and those in the neighborhood may recognize her by her brightly colored leg brace and pink & black speckled tongue. Although she’s often skeptical of new people, she melts into the sweetest, snuggliest girl once she knows and trusts you (salmon treats definitely help speed up that process). So happy to be a Pet of Powderhorn!

Luna Chand Singh Kehal
Luna loves looking out into the streets of Powderhorn and getting to know our neighbors (from a distance!). Having only moved to Powderhorn from Wisconsin in 2024, Luna prefers finding new ways to ascend to queendom from princesshood, like waking her parent up at 4 am for giggles. She's a social, friendly kitty who is moving out of her teenage years into her "I prefer to sit in the back of the closet while you work today" phase of life. Her favorite toy is a free rubber band and other people's shoes and feet, and her least favorite toy is something her parent spent too much time, energy, and money on specifically to get for her. In her spare time (between rubber band olympics and booty pat lounging), she's learning Punjabi and planning a coup over our home (with her Zizi KC, Tita Laura, Uncle Ethan, and enabler elder Harlowe). We use all pronouns for Luna, but somehow, very rarely, he.

We are so lucky to have all these adorable companions as our neighbors in Powderhorn! Make sure to follow our social media to see your fur babies in the spotlight.
