Every summer, the idyllic Powderhorn Park transforms into a vibrant hub of creativity and culture as it hosts the annual Powderhorn Art Fair. This beloved event has grown over the last 33 years to become a cornerstone of the local arts scene, gathering talented artists, passionate foodies, art collectors and enthusiasts, and attendees from all walks of life. This year’s art fair will be bigger, and more spectacular than ever, offering a captivating blend of art, music, food, and community spirit on Saturday through Sunday, August 3rd & 4th from 10 AM - 5 PM CST.
A Tapestry of Talent
Every year, the heart of South Minneapolis comes alive with vibrant colors, human connection, and the rich diversity of our community through our art. The fair features over 200 artists, each showcasing their unique creations. From intricate watercolor paintings to striking metal sculptures, the range of artwork is truly astounding.
The artist directory for this year is currently "under construction" to update our Powderhorn Art Fair website with this year's over 200 juried artists. While we work on that feel free to peruse last year's brilliant artists! We are also thrilled to introduce our brand-new artist category for 2024...
New Category Spotlight: Upcycle Art!
This year there will be an all-new artist category: Upcycled Art! Upcycle will showcase the creativity and innovation of artists who utilize upcycled materials in their creations, promoting sustainable practices and raising awareness about environmental issues.
Sadie Ward's "Brart"
One of the talented artists in this year’s upcycle category is Sadie Ward, creator of “Unleash The Creative Beast”. Sadie invented a new art form by taking old bras and making portraits of influential women, referred to as Brart (bra-art). “One of the ways to remove patriarchy in our society is to recreate faces that were actively erased by that patriarchal society. Ward told us. “I am continually collecting [used] bras through word of mouth and social media posts. In 2023 I diverted 100 pounds of bras from the landfill.”
Emma Crutcher's "Cool Trash"
Another highlight will be Emma Crutcher’s collection of handcrafted life-wares made from recycled plastic. In her practice, “Cool Trash”, Crutcher transforms post-consumer and post-industrial waste plastic into artful objects meant to engage the public in the value of waste plastic as a viable material in many applications. Crutcher explains, “Cool Trash is part of the Precious Plastic universe, an open-source network of recycling plastic on a community scale.”
Interactive Art for All
The Powderhorn Art Fair is not just about observing art—it’s about immersing yourself in collective creativity. Throughout the park, there will be numerous interactive experiences, workshops, and demonstrations where you can get into the action. For instance, children and adults can gather around crafting tables to create something of their own, partake in face painting by Starburst Arts, and dive into other worlds through Hosmer Library’s storytime.
We are especially excited about People Incorporated’s “Artability”. Artability provides a space for people to tap into their creativity, free of expectations or judgments, all while promoting mental health awareness. Each workshop includes art materials to share and the opportunity to paint, play, and learn with other artists. A teaching artist will be present to help answer questions, offer guidance, and provide feedback on the participants’ work. Artability believes,
The arts can be a powerful tool for self-expression, healing, personal growth, and a bit of fun. Our workshops are designed to be accessible to all, regardless of previous experience or ability.
The Sound of Community
A lineup of live community DJs from our local radio station KRSM will amplify community creativity throughout the weekend. On Saturday afternoon, join Biig Miic and his live hosting of “For the Culture”. “For the Culture” celebrates hip-hop, giving you a rhythmic and funky urban vibe, showcasing independent hip-hop, and so much more while you experience the 33rd Annual Powderhorn Art Fair.
Flavorful Cuisines from Across the Globe
With more choices than ever before, food trucks and stalls will line the park, offering a mouthwatering array of culinary delights. From Carnaval Mexican Grill’s Traditional Mexican roasted corn, Tibet Momo’s beef or vegetable Dumplings, Thirsty Dragon’s Bubble Tea & Vietnamese Coffee, to Taqueria El Patron’s Birria Tacos, and so much more! With over 20 food vendors, ranging from gourmet BBQ to artisan vegan treats, there will be something to satisfy every palate! If you're a foodie, aka, a person who loves to experience and taste the art of food, you don't want to miss this year's food truck lineup!
The fan-favorite Hopper's Mini Donuts will return, “honoring the classic cake recipe by making the batter on-site, frying each donut to golden perfection, and sprinkling it with cinnamon sugar”. We can already smell the freshly battered and fried donuts in the air! Some more uncommon delectables like Deep Roots Concessions, are making their debut at the art fair this year, “featuring legendary foods from Minnesota's Iron Range - meats and pasties... And favorites inspired by Northern Minnesota roots - porketta nachos to chocolate-covered cheesecake on a stick”. We can't wait to try these sweet and savory Iron Range-inspired favorites!
This year will also feature a variety of woman-owned vendors, including La La Ice Cream’s “Cool and creamy handmade ice cream in a variety of flavors including non-dairy options - in a cup, in a cone, in a sundae or float!”. La La Ice Cream has also become an annual favorite among fairgoers! We can't wait to try the mother & daughter-owned Thumbs Cookies, offering “Tiny Shortbread cookies in a variety of flavors - served warm to melt in your mouth.” Make sure to save room for dessert! You won't want to miss these sweet treats.
Community Spirit
The palpable sense of love for community and creativity is what truly sets the Powderhorn Art Fair apart. You will see people engaged, connecting through shared humanity, in animated conversations about the artwork, collaborating in workshops, or simply enjoying the activities together. This event has always been a testament to the power of art to unite and inspire.
Local businesses and organizations also play a significant role in supporting the fair. Many will have booths to information about their services and products, or provide fun activities for kids. The fair is not just an event, but a collaborative effort that highlights the best of what Powderhorn has to offer.
Looking Ahead
As the summer sun shines brightly upon the weekend-long festivities, the Powderhorn Art Fair will remain bustling with community delight. This local fair offers a space for families to linger, children to play, and friends to fill the day with laughter. This year’s fair will celebrate the creativity and diversity that make Powderhorn such a special place.
Mark your calendars for August 3rd & 4th 10 AM-5 PM. Join us in creating new and lasting memories that will continue to inspire and resonate within the community for years to come. The Powderhorn Art Fair is more than just a gathering; it’s a celebration of the heart and soul of Powderhorn itself.
